Took Horsa to Normandy. Col. of Glider Pilots and his staff including a Brigadier General and Chester Wilmont the War Correspondent.
Arnhem - first four days Sept. 17, 18, 19 and 20 did drops.
SOE’s mostly to France and Holland to supply the underground but also one to Norway.
Varsity (Code Name) - The crossing of the Rhine.
Never shot down - only shot up on occasions.
History
Spaff was born on January 15, 1921 in Toronto and attended Northern Vocational High School. He enlisted in Toronto in 1941. Manning Pool, Stanley N.S., EFTS at Moncton, N.B. where he received his Pilot Wing in January, 1943.
He did his OTU at Pennfield Ridge and Yarmouth N.S. He was then posted overseas to Ashborne, Darbyshire at #42 OTU. Apr. 43 to Aug. 43 P.T.S. and H.G.C.V. also Ayr ot work with SAS. Hurn - Nov/43 - March/43 Harwell til Oct/44; River Hall Oct/44 - April/45. He served with RAF Squadrons 295 and 570. His crew consisted of P/O. Dunn (Bomb Aimer); P/O. H. Brown (Nav.); P/O Tubman(Gunner); W/O Chotoorthy(WOP) and other spaces.
Married Sept.30/44 - our wedding was held up for 3-4 weeks because of Arnhem. Still married to same beautiful Engilsh gal Eve. Two beautiful daughter and four great grand kids. Helped and ex 570 buddy write a book on the squadron - unfortunately he died before it was finished - but his son and wife published it “ Winged Chariot”.
