Most Memorable Experiences

On operational training, lost an engine over the Irish Sea: Wimpy just made it to Liverpool on one engine.
Bombing Cologne by daylight - aircraft above dropped incendaries through our aircraft ...one destroyed the navigation table and GEE box ....at my elbow. Mining Oslo harbour at 10,000 ft., predicted flak and fighter attack. Could not reduce height because of mountains.
Shot down November 4, 1944 after bombing target in Ruhr Valley. Probably by a fighter underneath the aircraft. Came down between Cologne and Bonn. Fell into an open pit mine. Aircraft was hit in starboard engine which caught fire and got beyond control, into the wing etc. Captured on November 9 after trying to walk through to the American lines ... about 60 miles away. Walked at night ... in the rain....hid out during the day... very cold and miserable.          Nov. 13/01
