Most Memorable Operation
Ron reports: “Flew Spitfire alone and unescorted from UK to Cairo via Gibraltar and Benghazi in February ‘43 Crash landed at Heliopolis, Cairo. While at #74 OTU Lydda, Palestine, landed Hurricane II after a wheel dropped off on take-off, with hydraulics and radio u/s . Landed safely but the Hurricane wiped itself out! Detailed to be control officer, to escort squadron’s ground crew and equipement from Calcutta to Comilla, India, in 1943. My rank at the time was Flight Sergeant!”
And further: “When I was taking the Squadron across the north of India, we had to ferry personnel and equipment across the Ganges-Brahmaputra rivers: whilst on the ferry, a chap in the uniform of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, tapped me on the shoulder; he turned out to be a chap from the same street I used to live on, pre-enlistment days! We still meet from time to time, and we always remind each other of this episode”.
