Memorable Operations 1

After completing one third of the usual tour of ops. Howard got a new pilot, Bill Dixon, who opted for a transfer to the Middle East. They went via Gibraltar, and Malta to Kabrit, Eygpt. Howard notes that it was sad to leave “an exceptional English gentleman and friend” Navigator Len Mayer, who was later killed on a raid against the German ships, Gneisenau and Scharnhorst on a dash through the Channel.
Howard completed his tour in August, 1942. He says that apart from the Benghazi “mail run” and targets in the desert and in the Aegean Sea, one exceptional and intereating trip was a single a/c raid on a central German HQ at Tymbake, Crete, a trip for which the crew was “selected to volunteer”. Later intelligence reports, and photos, confirmed a wipe-out of the HQ with hundreds of dead. Howard says that they surprised everyone by returning from this raid.
